Eniola Shokunbi: The 12-Year-Old Nigerian Inventor Who Designs Affordable Air Filter to Combat Airborne Diseases
Eniola Shokunbi is a 12-year-old Nigerian who recently made waves across social media channels and news platforms. This was a result of her remarkable effort in designing an affordable air filter, which will help to reduce the spread of airborne diseases in schools.
Eniola, a fifth-grader at Commodore MacDonough STEM Academy in Middletown, USA, was inspired to create the device after being tasked with developing a solution to enhance school safety during potential future pandemics.
This innovative design utilizes a simple combination of components; including a box fan, furnace filters, duct tape, and cardboard, which together resulted in a cost-effective air filter that can be produced for approximately $60 per unit.
The air filter works by drawing in air from all sides and filtering it through the furnace filters before releasing clean air. With the support of scientists at the University of Connecticut (UConn), Eniola's design underwent rigorous testing and was found to be highly effective in eliminating over 99% of harmful germs in the air, as confirmed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Recognizing the potential impact of this invention, the Connecticut State Bond Commission soon approved $11.5 million in funding to implement Eniola's air filters in schools across the state. This initiative, known as SAFE-CT: Supplemental Air Filtration for Education, aims to improve indoor air quality and reduce the risk of disease transmission in classrooms.
Looking ahead, Eniola aspires to see her air filters implemented in classrooms, across the world, especially her country, Nigeria. Also, she stressed the importance of scientific solutions in protecting children's health.
“A lot of people don't realize that the only thing standing between them and getting sick is science,” Eniola said.
Eniola's achievement will, however, inspire other young Nigerians to pursue their dreams in STEM fields. Notwithstanding, this also brings pride to the Nigerian community worldwide.
