Nigeria Takes the Lead in Global Media and Cultural Initiatives
On 29th November 2024, Nigeria's Honourable Minister for Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, alongside the Ambassador of Nigeria to UNESCO, H. E. Dr. Hajo Sani met with UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, Dr. Tawfik Jelassi, together they discussed key groundbreaking initiatives poised to position Nigeria at the forefront of global progress.
One key focus of their discussion was Nigeria’s proposal to host the first-ever Category 2 Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Institute, a transformative initiative to be considered for approval at UNESCO’s next General Conference.
This institute aims to address critical issues such as disinformation, misinformation, fake news, and hate speech by fostering critical thinking and responsible media engagement. As a pioneering hub, the MIL Institute will empower individuals to navigate the complexities of today’s media landscape while promoting informed citizenship and media literacy.
Another significant agenda was Abuja’s nomination as a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. Known for its vibrant cultural and creative industries, Abuja stands as a beacon of innovation and creativity in Nigeria.
Joining this prestigious network will not only enhance Abuja’s global recognition but also harness the creative sector as a driver for sustainable development and innovation. This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader vision of leveraging cultural richness and creativity to address global challenges and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
Also, it reflect Nigeria’s commitment to advancing media, cultural development, and sustainability on the world stage.
This meeting with UNESCO marks a milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward creating impactful legacies in media literacy and cultural innovation, paving the way for a more informed, creative, and sustainable future.
A week later, Dr. Hajo Sani, would then receive the certificate of inscription of Kano Durbar on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Paraguay. The certificate was presented by UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Culture - Mr Ernesto Renato Ottone Ramirez.
The Kano Durbar, one of Nigeria’s most iconic cultural festivals, is a spectacular display of pageantry, tradition, and unity. Rooted in centuries-old Hausa-Fulani heritage, the festival is marked by royal processions, vibrant equestrian parades, traditional music, and breathtaking attire. Held annually during Eid celebrations, the Durbar symbolizes community cohesion, cultural pride, and the preservation of Nigeria’s rich history.
