In a major recognition of African excellence in the global tech space, Nigerian-born computer scientist Professor Rita Orji has been appointed to the United Nations’ Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence.

Out of a staggering pool of over 2,600 candidates worldwide, Professor Orji was selected as one of only 40 global experts to serve on the newly formed body. The panel was established by the UN General Assembly to provide rigorous, independent scientific advice on the development, ethical risks, and global impact of AI.

A Trailblazing Career

Born in Enugu State and raised in the town of Owelli, Professor Orji’s journey is a testament to academic excellence. After graduating with First Class Honours from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, she moved abroad to complete her Master’s and eventually earned a PhD from the University of Saskatchewan in 2014, becoming the first woman from her hometown to achieve a doctorate.

Currently, she serves as the Canada Research Chair in Persuasive Technology at Dalhousie University, where she leads the Persuasive Computing Lab. Her work is renowned for focusing on "Human-Centered AI" designing technology that prioritizes health, well-being, and social good, particularly for marginalized and underserved communities.

Bridging the Global AI Divide

The UN Panel was launched to ensure that AI governance is dictated by scientific integrity rather than corporate or geopolitical interests. UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that the panel will allow all member states regardless of their wealth or technological capacity, to participate in the AI revolution on an equal footing.

“Rita is a powerhouse,” said Dr. Nur Zincir-Heywood, Associate Dean of Research at Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Computer Science. “We are continually impressed with her accomplishments and the incredible way she represents our Faculty and institution.”

Why This Appointment Matters

As AI continues to reshape industries from healthcare to national security, the UN is moving to address critical concerns regarding bias, data privacy, and job displacement. Professor Orji’s three-year term will see her at the forefront of international policy, helping to guide the UN’s Global Dialogue on AI Governance.

Her appointment is being celebrated not just as a personal milestone, but as a victory for representation, ensuring that African voices and perspectives are central to the future of global technology.
