SKILLS FOR TODAY, SOLUTION FOR TOMORROW: URNI GRADUATES FIRST DCLDSP COHORT
The Unveiling and Rebranding Nigeria Initiative, (URNI), in partnership with Friends of Nigeria in Europe (FON), graduated the first cohort of the Disapora-Supported Computer Literacy and Digital Skills Programme, (DCLDSP) students reaffirming its dedication to empowering young Nigerians with digital competencies relevant for national development
Speaking during graduation ceremony and project showcase held at DCLDSP training Centre in Abuja, the Convener of Unveiling and Rebranding Nigeria Initiative, Mr Abdulkadir Lawal, described the program as strategic intervention designed to bridge the digital skills gap among young Nigerians while promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, and responsible citizenship.
Lawal explained that the three month education programme, supported by Friends of Nigeria in Europe (FON), prepared members with practical understanding in basic computer literacy, data analytics, graphic design and branding, and web development. He noted that the program was implemented to increase access to digital education and economic possibilities across entire groups within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.
The URNI convener revealed that 27 participants were admitted to the pioneer group, while 18 had successfully completed the intensive training and fulfilled the requirements for graduation.
He commended the graduates on their resilience, discipline and dedication, urging them to use their newly acquired knowledge to solve societal problems and contribute to the development of Nigeria.
Lawal reaffirmed URNI's resolve to sustain the initiative through strategic partnership, Internship possibilities, mentoring programs, and an advanced second phase of training, which will introduce participants to emerging technologies.
In his goodwill message, the Guest of Honour, Mr. Jerry Kanyinebi urged the graduates to be problem solvers by identifying needs within their communities and developing practical solutions through technology.
He advised them to build professional portfolio by documenting every project they execute and position themselves for opportunities within and outside Nigeria.
He stated, "Look at your immediate environment and identify problems you can solve. Document everything you have learned, preserve your work, and continue seeking opportunities. The world needs your skills and your ideas."
Enenche also appealed to stakeholders and development partners to support initiatives that provide graduates with internship placements and practical work experience to strengthen their professional growth.
Delivering the keynote address, the Special Guest of Honour Mr. Peter Enenche, congratulated the graduating students for successfully completing the programme, describing them as ambassadors of positive change.
He remarked: "You are no longer part of the problem. You are now the solution."
Enenche encouraged the graduates to remain focused, continue learning, and build sustainable careers through consistency, innovation, and perseverance.
Speaking on behalf of the graduands, the Vice President of the DCLDSP Students, Mrs. Elizabeth Akagbusim, expressed appreciation to URNI, FON, facilitators, and partners for investing in the future of young Nigerians through digital education.
A parent of one of the graduating students also commended the organizers for providing an initiative that has transformed the lives of participants and prepared them for greater opportunities.
The highest point of the event was the presentation of certificates to grandaunts and awards recognizing exceptional performance.
Honours were presented for outstanding attendance and consistency, while awards were also given to Best Graduating Students in Data Analytics, Web Development and Graphic Design and Branding. Special recognition was awarded to the DCLDSP Patriot and the Overall Best Graduating Student.
The graduation ceremony attracted development partners, media representatives, stakeholders, parents/guardians, facilitators and supporters, who commended the collaboration between URNI and FON to promote digital inclusion and youth empowerment.
The event concluded with a renewed call for greater collaboration among public and private sector organizations to expand access to digital skills development and prepare more young Nigerians for opportunities within the global digital economy.
